- To promote the artistic, educational, social, professional, and recreational activities of the students.
- To represent, promote and defend the common interests of students
- To serve as a medium of communication between students and the administration
- To promote, coordinate and direct the activities of students
- To represent students on a provincial and national level
- To do all other things that are incidental or conductive to these purposes.
Every year, SUNSCAD holds elections in the spring for the Executive and Council positions. Often there is the need to hold a by-election again in the fall to fill any gaps or unfilled positions.
Council meetings are where the Executive who sit on major committees and boards in the school report back to councilors, hear new news from councilors and seek feedback from students about the workings of the school.
Council meets every other week during the school year and once a month during the summer. The exact date and time is posted on the whiteboard in the lounge. If you would like to be added to the email reminder about council meetings please contact Tara Fleming at tfleming@nscad.ca

The president is responsible for maintaining efficient administration of the Union, is the spokesperson of the union and represents the opinions of the Union as determined by council. If you ever feel like you are not being heard, come out to a council meeting! The president also represents the Union and all its members on the Board of governors, liases with the Alumni Association and is the staffing relations officer for temporary or permanent staff hired by the Union.
External:

The VP External is responsible for the development and formulation of policy on external affairs. The VP External also maintains relationships with the CFS as well as implements campaigns derived from them. This VP also is in charge of the dissemination of information from the CFS and local government to the students, and attends all conferences or meetings of affiliate student organizations.
Financial:

The VP Financial is responsible for all policy on issues that arise from the board. Finance is responsible for the maintenance of good relationships with the members of the board, develop briefs for the board and finally sit on the board of directors. Finance also maintains good relationships with and oversees clubs that are ratified with SUNSCAD. The VP Finance also looks over finances with the Resource Coordinator and updates the Exec and Council about their financial affairs.
Academic:

The VP academic is responsible for the formulation fo policy on academic matters in the school. The VP Academic also represents the Union on the official academic governing bodies of the faculty in the school and acts as an advocate for students on academic matters. The VP Academic is where you go if you'd like to appeal a mark, an evaluation, bring up concerns about the courses being offered, treatment in classes, you name it. If its Academic, they deal with it.
Cultural:

Cultural is responsible for the development of policy relating to social justic and human rights issues. The VP Cultural acts as a liason betwen artist, non-profit, social justice organizations and council. The person in this position also coordinates info sessions, workshops and so forth which deal with issues facing the local art community or social justice issues. The VP Cultural also coordinates the food bank.
Internal:

The VP Internal is responsible for effective communication and distribution of information and swag to the membership. They are responsible for the weekly dispatch delivered to your email, postering, monitoring the bulletin boards around the school, maintaining the website. Internal also organizes at least one dance/party a semester, coordinates workshops about internal issues of NSCAD as required and coordinates the publication of free coffee each year.
